Our History

Since its inception in 1975, Mitcham Community House has evolved from hosting a single playgroup to becoming a cornerstone of the community, responding to local needs through a wide range of activities and services. The journey began when the Nunawading Child Care Association, with significant support from community members and driven by residents’ enthusiasm, utilised Mountview House for community activities. Initial plans for a daycare centre evolved into a broader vision for a neighbourhood house—a vision that was solidified through community support, evidenced by over 100 positive responses to a survey.

Over the years, Mitcham Community House has adapted to the changing dynamics of society, recognising the diminishing presence of extended families and the increasing need for community connection, job retraining, and affordable leisure activities. The House has become a hub of warmth, laughter, and support, offering a diverse range of activities at minimal cost to ensure accessibility for all.

In 1996, moving to purpose-built premises at 19 Brunswick Road allowed the House to expand its offerings, despite financial struggles, owing to the dedication of its volunteers, management committee, staff, and tutors. Particularly notable is the childcare service, heralded as the heart and soul of Mitcham Community House, showcasing its enduring commitment to nurturing the community’s youngest members and their families.
